AIA|LA Announces 2016 Design Award Winners!
Los Angeles, CA – October 25, 2016 – The American Institute of Architects Los Angeles (AIA|LA) announced the winners of its prestigious 2016 Design Awards program Monday night, October 24, 2016, at an evening celebrating the achievements of recipients.
Selected by a jury of distinguished architects based across the United States and conversant in the field’s potential at national and international levels, the AIA|LA Design Awards honor design excellence in some of the most significant completed projects in the country at this time. The caliber of work submitted and volume of submissions make the program amongst the most competitive AIA chapters host.

Winners of the competition’s counterpart, the AIA|LA Next LA awards, bestowed on as yet unbuilt commissions, were also announced. These dynamic solutions for our future were selected by an esteemed multi-disciplinary jury which included prestigious architects, a noted academic, and the Los Angeles Times architecture critic.
This year saw the AIA|LA launch its first COTE LA awards, given to projects that further and/or demonstrate achievement in the implementation of sustainability features. These winning projects were selected by experts and innovators in the field, who noted performance, systems integration and other key elements in addition to design.
2016 AIA|LA Presidential Honorees, recognizing individuals who have re-defined the possibilities of design, produced meaningful bodies-of-work in an overall context, or contributed significantly to the profession and its practitioners, were bestowed by AIA|LA President Debra Gerod, FAIA, Partner, Gruen Associates.
Over five hundred attendees took in the proceedings at the historic Palace Theatre on Broadway in Los Angeles. The stunning and storied venue, the first Los Angeles building to install fire sprinklers, served as reminder of historic contributions to the field over time and Los Angeles' re-burgeoning Historic Core. Tom Gilmore, the developer at the center of this resurgence, welcomed guests from the stage to begin the evening. While Award winners, Presidential Honorees, and Design Award attendees, mingled throughout the venue during the après-party and dinner.
Design Award and Next LA awards are given in three classifications: Honor, Merit and Citation, with Honor being the highest category.
Completed projects, located anywhere, that are designed by AIA members from firms based in the LA area, and architecture constructed in Los Angeles by any AIA member, no matter their base of operations, are eligible for submission for Design Awards.
