American Institute of Architects Los Angeles convenes “Design For Dignity”
Congress Composed of Architects will Develop Action-Plan
to Reduce Homelessness and Increase Housing Affordability

March 9, 2016, (Los Angeles, CA) – Exacerbated by a lack of housing stock, Los Angeles’ homeless crisis is at a tipping point. 44,000 people throughout the region live in the streets, while others move further from the city’s core to find affordable housing. To address this impasse, the American Institute of Architects Los Angeles (AIA|LA) will convene “Design for Dignity” on Friday, May, 6, 2016.

The day will be dedicated to generating tactics to alleviate a region-wide affordability crisis, with an added emphasis on creating more housing opportunities for the homeless.

Conceived as a congress rather than a conference, “Design for Dignity” will serve as a forum to create consensus among Los Angeles architects and designers for solutions that achieve greater housing affordability for all.

As members of the congress, architects and civic leaders will propose their own ideas in afternoon breakout sessions focused on solution-building. Guided by key facilitators, participants will work together to select best practices and coalesce around a workable path forward. During Design for Dignity’s morning session, individuals with a wide range of perspectives will present multidisciplinary solutions and ideas: sociologists, housing developers, veterans, builders, innovators and architects, as well as those who have first-hand experience of homelessness.

Design for Dignity is set for May 6, 2016, (8:00AM - 4:00PM) at Inner-City Arts in Los Angeles.

While individual architects, firms, and related organizations have consistently facilitated design excellence to reduce the housing crisis and serve individuals in need, the event is designed to produce a position statement about homelessness and housing affordability on behalf of the larger Los Angeles architecture community.
