About the College of Fellows

122 members from across the country were inducted to College of Fellows (FAIA), along with six new Honorary Fellows. The honor recognizes architect members who have made a significant contribution to the profession and to society that would not have occurred without their efforts. Ten of the new Fellows are AIA Los Angeles members.

The AIA College of Fellows is composed of Institute members who are elected to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Each year, candidates who have been Architect members for at least ten years are nominated in one of five categories (either by their Chapter or by a group of individual members):

  • Design, Urban Design, or Preservation
  • Education, Research, Literature, or Practice
  • Leadership in the AIA and other related professional organizations
  • Public Service, Government, Industry or Organization
  • Alternative Career, Volunteer Work with Organizations Not Directly Connected with the Built Environment, or Service to Society
Nominees submit their portfolios online, including a 35-word summary statement and supporting exhibits, to the College of Fellows before the October deadline. The jury meets in January to review and vote on the submittals.

Nationwide, just over 3000 of the AIA's 80,000 members are Fellows. This year, 230 candidates were nominated across the country, of which 122 (53%) became Fellows. In California, 21 new Fellows were elevated, out of 46 nominees.

Serving on this year's jury were:

  • Linda Searl, FAIA (Chair) – Searl Lamaster Howe Architects, Chicago
  • John Castellana, FAIA – TMP Architecture, Inc., Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
  • Brian Dougherty, FAIA, -- Dougherty + Dougherty Architects, LLP, Costa Mesa, California
  • Leevi Kiil, FAIA - Leevi Kiil Architect, Wayne, New Jersey
  • Susan Maxman, FAIA - SMP Architects LTD, Philadelphia
  • Craig Rafferty, FAIA - Rafferty Rafferty Tollefson Lindeke Architects, St. Paul
  • Raymond Yeh, FAIA - University of Hawaii, School of Architecture, Honolulu

Architect members of AIA/LA who are eligible and would like more information should send a brief email indicating their interest to Steve Tanner by February 13.

If you have questions about your years of membership, please contact or call 800-242-3837.
